Not looking to have a go at older people, I am sure your generation has worked hard. I am asking posters like TLOBS to try understand the daunting situation that is facing younger people and have some empathy.
The ratio of your salary to your mortgage is simply not on the scale that younger people are facing today. Furthermore, I am sure you will have bought your house for a fraction of what people are paying now. The average house price was £10,000 in 1974.
On the downside for your generation, interest rates between 1974 and 1989 averaged 11% over the whole period, so I understand that will have made life much harder.
I am not looking to cause an argument between generations. I was lucky enough to be able to buy my first flat with x 3.5 my salary, but my daughter won't be able to do that ever. It doesn't matter what she does, she's going to be priced out and will have tuition fees on top of that if she goes to Uni.
I'm just asking people to try and understand the situation youngsters are in. I think people in their 20's and younger have been utterly shafted to be honest.
We need affordable housing built on a major scale.
