All members of the Danish Royal House are riding high in the opinion polls. As one Danish journalist wrote yesterday "nothing/nobody can spoil it for them but themselves". Previous Message
I think in the case of the Dutch King a lesson can be learned: don’t try to be common when you are not and maintain a modest lifestyle. Its neither convincing nor genuine to lecture people in public and then turn around and do the opposite ‘ privately’. People in the NL are disappointed in the King because he does not practice what he - as part of the government - preaches and apparently thinks the rules or moral codes do not apply to him when it concerns his private life / wealth. That severely undermines trust in him, the monarchy and other institutions. Not the other way around! Previous Message
Crown prince Frederik is starting with a high approval rate. Willem-Alexander had the same good fortune. Unfortunately as John said he's made a couple of gaffs but mainly suffers from the fact that the Dutch feel the state is failing them. Leading to a dislike or distrust of national institutions. That also affects their trust in the monarchy.
I don't think a similar situation applies to Denmark but that is my view as an outsider. Previous Message
It is a difficult balancing act for all royals. I have the impression that Frederik IX struck a good balance between dignity and being a man of the people. Perhaps he is the right model for his grandson. Previous Message
It will be a challenge to maintain the boy next door routine once in the top position. His colleague in the Netherlands has also found it difficult to balance informality and formality, private and public. As a result of this (and some bad decision making) his position is not very strong at the moment. These are difficult times for royals I think. Previous Message
From what I have been reading, the very thing that has endeared CP Frederik to the Danish people, his "folksy" manner, may be a challenge for him as a monarch. It will be interesting to see which endeavours the CP couple will be able to stay involved in, i.e. Mary Fonden, Royal Run, etc. Previous Message

Is the Crown Prince any less popular with the Danes following the newspaper story about his night out in Madrid ? Or do they think they were just 2 friends having a dinner together ?
