There actually was a hint at this in a ROYALTY magazine issue several years ago, with Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary on the cover. The couple wore cryptic smiles on their faces, as if aware of some secret the public was unaware of -- but which the writer guessed. The speculation in the article was that Her Majesty would eventually abdicate -- was not expected to right away.

As I (and others) hoped, she would serve until at least her Golden Jubilee, before stepping down -- notwithstanding public statements to the contrary (claiming that she intended to die with the crown on, just like Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain).

However, unlike Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands, I believe she will continue to be styled by the title of Queen, with the qualification of Majesty. It's just that because she will no longer be on the throne, she will forfeit the designation of being Her Majesty THE Queen of Denmark -- which should go to her daughter-in-law Mary. Instead, she will be simply Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II.
