Christian VII palace is used for receptions and hosting guests. It does not contain offices or living quarters for the monarch.
Margrethe lives next door in Christian IX Palace. There she has her home, offices and som reception rooms.
Frederik and Mary live across in Frederik VIII palace that was fully restored for them after the death of Queen Ingrid. She and Frederik IX lived there both as crown princely couple and as the reigning couple.
The fourth palace (Christian VIII) is part museum but also houses the rooms for Princess Benedikte.
Margrethe owns Marselisborg in Jutland so that will remain with her. We might see a switch at Fredensborg where the queen now resides in the main palace and her son and his family in the chancellery. That was originally turned into a royal residence for Queen Ingrid after the death of her husband.
Grasten is a summer residence that always was intended for Frederik and Mary.
Near Copenhagen there is also Sorgenfri palace where her grandparents Alexandrine and Christian IX spent a lot of time. Later Margrethe's uncle Knud and his wife Caroline-Mathilde lived there and one of their sons and later princes Elisabeth lived in one of the buildings on the grounds of this residence. Maybe that become a residence for either Margrethe II or Frederik X. Previous Message
The Amalienbrog Palais of Frederik and mary was renovated so that it could also be the residenoce of the King so i think the weill rmeain there and Queen Margrethe will keep hers. Previous Message
I am curious after the abdication. Is the present palace at Amalienborg 'her' palace or is this reserved for the monarch's use, i.e., does she have to move to one of the other 4 palaces? Does QM receive the same accomodations as her mother, e.g., residence at Grasten, Chancellery at Fredensborg, etc?
However, I don't think Queen Margrethe will retire but serve in a limited role or as needed like her mother, Queen Ingrid. Previous Message
I am shocked as well. Who was the last Scandinavian monarch to abdicate voluntarily? Chrisina of Sweden? Previous Message
I'm shocked and surprised and then again I'm not. I am shocked because I didn't expect it nor saw it coming.
But with people living much longer it does make sense.
I wish Her Majesty all her best in her retirement! Previous Message
