Previous Message Come to think of it, I believe that Queen Victoria's second son was also offered the Greek throne. I'm not sure when, and what exactly he himself thought of the idea; but in the end, his mother declined the offer on his behalf. On the abdication of King Otto of Greece, in 1862, Prince Alfred (he was 18 years old and was not yet Duke of Edinburgh) was chosen to succeed him. The British government blocked the plans, largely because of the Queen's opposition to the idea. He was serving in the British Navy at the time.
