When the vote to enter the Common Market was taken in 1975 I was working in the African bush (near Lake Kariba). Among my colleagues were a Canadian, 2 Ausies, a Kiwi, and an Indian. As the result came in over the radio we couldn't believe our ears - why would the UK turn it's back on the Commonwealth? We felt the answer was the increasing number of Brits going on holiday to Europe and it seems this was the reason many voted to remain in the EU. this time.
I got the impression the vote this time to a large extent went along age lines with the older generations voting to leave. This would to some extent account for the much higher Remain vote in Scotland which, since the Scottish Independence Referendum, has allowed voting from age 16!!
