This was the very first Toledo Torch that I acquired a number of years ago. It sent me down the slippery slope of collecting highway/street kerosene lanterns and torches. I have always wondered why this torch has a depressed top. It appears to have been manufactured this way; but, it seems to me that rain water or snow would collect in the depression resulting in poor performance. I have been searching smudge pots for 4 or 5 years now and have never seen another one with a burner seat below the rim of the torch. Has anyone ever seen one like this or know the reason it was manufactured with the depression? This one was made for the Illinois State Division of Highways.
