It will probably never be to your liking but it should get better when things settle down. Talk to Donna and see if she can give you more time and come in at least every week. It's difficult to keep a place tidy when its occupied all the time and people with time on their hands tend to hit the kitchen. If you have a dishwasher, ask that dirty dishes be put in it.
It's not easy to start to live with people who have different habits than your own, particularly in a small place and its understandable to get annoyed. Speak up on what's really not acceptable and ignore the small stuff.
As far as an assisted living place, Mama is right. The ones I've seen were very nice and I have friends living happily in them now. But you are right too and would be happier in your own space. That's the key, do what you can that makes YOU happiest.
