All waiting for the moment Charles III of William V decides that only children of the main line can be HRH Prince(ss) and all others will be lord or lady. Something HM Queen Margrethe II of Denmark did because she preferred doing it herself and not leaving it to her son to do. Beatrix of the Netherlands and Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden also took responsibility.
Charles III is caving in to media pressure and daddy wanting his son and daughter-in-law to like him. He needs to understand that his son and that son's wife are only in it for two things:
1 status (they have no real claim to fame on their own merit so are lifting on their relationship to the UK monarch)
2 money (they have plenty but want more and Charles is their easiest way to more).
Sad but true. Another senior citizen being played by one of his kids and their spouse.
It does get me to one major issue:
Do Lilibet and Meghan have UK citizenship?
Because US citizens are not allowed to take on foreign titles. So outside of the realms of Charles III it's HRH the Duke of Sussex and mrs Meghan Markle or mrs Megan Mountbatten-Windsor.
In case of Archie and Lilibet im assuming he has UK nationality because of his birth so he would be HRH prince Archie of Sussex and if Lili only has the US nationality she would remain miss Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor.
They had no patience and no real knowledge of the rules for these titles. I agree with JamesL that it was always her plan (and perhaps his) to leave. My guess with respect to the timing is that the Royal Household is simply tidying up titles before the Coronation, and that neither King Charles nor Prince William wants to change precedents regarding titles for the grandchildren of monarchs which they might regret later. They both appear very interested in guarding the institution, which is as it should be.
Which means she (and her husband) did not (want to) understand how the monarchy works and that is exactly why they left. Now they finally publicly have what they wanted: royal titles for their children. Dear Lord... let this be the end of it.
I think they both knew about the letters patent when she mentioned "George V or VI or something". I'm sure it had been explained. But she stuck with her "campaign" because the late Queen had acted specifically for the titles for all of the children of William and Catherine. She wanted the same for hers. but did not understand the different circumstances of the two families, or wanted to ignore that.
