: the hunger pangs were almost overwhelming and I wasted no time spitting the beast on a piece of metal and hanging it low over the fire....a few sticks and some stones heating up to hold the heat once the wood burnt down - the low flame crackling and hissing slightly as it touched the now scorched skin of the tarsk. Using a cloth I turned it slightly and settled back on my haunches to watch it cook ...the scent wafting around the overhang making my mouth water. I glanced at my blade and picked it up ...reaching for a covered wetstone to sharpen it.....the almost silent hiss only interrupted by the occasional snap of wood in the fire....

: The wind picked up a gust and dragged the aromatic fumes of the cooking tarsk away from the rock face....I glances heavenward...noting the clouds skudding across the sky...as if in a hurry to get somewhere.....my mind returned to the meal and using my now razor sharp knife I cut off a thin strip of already cooked meat...releasing a hissing stream of juices that poured like a mini waterfall falling crackling into the fire. I absently chewed on the hot meat using some water to cool it down in my mouth ..... glancing out to the darkening surrounds I hunkered down my head hunched between my shoulders....

: *Again, I had set out early. I had felt that it was up to Tuchuks to run the show on the Plains, more of a shared responsibility in the pass; but here, on our turf, the responsibility for everyone’s safety, especially Tuchuks out of their element – was mine. So I had ridden Triumph to the extent of where I had scouted on foot yesterday. She could care for herself, and would now come when I whistled for her, so I was not worried to leave her behind as I scouted into fresh and unknown territory.*

: I quietly snapped a few more branches....poking them into the fire...moving the hot coals there around so as to maximise the heat....gradually turning the tarsk so as to cook it evenly..... I proded the meat to see how much it sank in .... id been shown some time ago this was one way of checking how well meat is cooked. I decided it needed more time so settled back feet outstretched to the fire watching it cook the smoke cicling away in the breeze

: *The sky darkens quickly here, before it rains, as it does, in torrents, at least twice a day. The beasts of the jungle, I had noticed, sense this change of light and head for cover. It’s not a good time to hunt, before the rain, but it is a good time to make quick time, as one needs to take less care to avoid predators. I notice that there are bare patches of rock exposed in places on the ground, there might be a geological formation around here someplace, above the surface, perhaps a cave to shelter from the oncoming storm.*

: Glancing up into the skies the darkening clouds perhaps a foretaste of a particularly savage downpour....there was sufficient shelter and the overhang led the water away from my small shelter in the lee of the cliff...the water naturally running down to the small pool below.

: *I climb a tree, and I can see where there is a rock formation towards the north, and smoke. That might be a reason to avoid, or to approach. I wish I had Richard’s spyglass. I weigh the options, and possible info on this region wins out. Whatever the size and inclination of this party was, it was best to find out now. I had to, at the very least, scout into that area and see how many were there, and if they were natives or an expedition. So I descend the tree, and head off thataway, looking for tracks that will give me info on whoever was building fires up in those rocks.*

: eventually, though with my stomach rumbling and my mouth watering like a Cosian square fountain, the tarsk was cooked,.,,,,my blade stabbed deep inside led only to clear fat trickling down the silvered blade....the meat was cooked well and I lifted it off the sticks I had used to cook it and carefully laid it to one side....then raised the wall surrounding my fire piut so that the heat would warm the stones up and the flames would not dance to high and be so visible

: *I plot a course that will get me downwind of the formation on a arced course to stay out of sight from the top of the formation. It takes a while to find any footprints at all. Clearly this is not a big party. The perpetual rains wipe away tracks and spoor here every day, it's not like the Forest.. There really could be an army up there, marched in three days ago, and I couldn't tell from the ground. But the one fresh track I do find seems to be female-sized and booted. Talunas?*

: *Sure enough, I next encounter a snare trap, the kind of thing I would expect from Talunas. Men would probably have laid steel traps, or dug pits. Still I am carefull to prod the ground ahead of me with the butt of my 9' Tuchuk lance, to check for such things, as I make my way closer to the rock formation, pretty sure I now smell roasting tarsk.*

: I placed the tarsk on the stone and using my knife cut off a haunch...the front left leg....dripping with juices...I had to restrain myself from eating too fast...the hunger of the past few days had been excessive and my belly had no doubt shrunk...i didn't want to make myself ill in my haste to eat so I took a smal bite savouring the strong gamey flavour

: I chewed the meat savoring the flavor as the juices dripped down my chin and into the ample cleavage below....I didn't like getting dirty but for once i was too hungry to care... the meat was tender the beast having been young and it was easy to eat. I wrapped the rest up in a clean cloth and placed it behind me while I carried on chewing on the haunch...swallowing small mouthful with water from my flask....the rain a current now .... pouring off the lip of the overhanging and splashing the ground nearby....I gazed silently out into the darkness unsure if someone is out there....the look to my left seeing the silouette of a woman.....eyes wide I drop the meat and reach for my bow....stepping swiftly away from the fire hoping my eyes get time to accustom to the light

: *The rain had started fast, and I had raised the askari shield over my head like an umbrella. The leather would keep me dry for now. I don’t know if I will get arrows, which at this distance I could most likely dodge, a hail, people coming out on foot, or no response at all. But for now, I will wait and see. If they are Talunas, they probably think I look like a potential recruit.*
