All: *I had spent the summer exploring the most remote eastern reaches of the Forest. game there was more plentiful, forage easier, than in the more populated areas near the western coast or along the river. I was good enough that I had no need of sister Panthers to help me survive. true, I risked dying from some injury or misfortune that I would have survived with help, the way I had only survived my broken arm because Slip had come looking for me, but on the other hand I didn't risk getting dragged into some greenhorn's folly either, so, all in all, my survival percentages were higher alone.*

All: the flames flickered, the wind off the river shifting.. I again, lifting my gaze to the skies expecting to see the darkening clouds of a storm.. and saw nothing.. the gust of wind blowing strands of raven curls astray.. turning my gaze again to look out across the river and then through the stand of reeds towards the trail where Shanda had been initially found.. fishing of all things

All: *but now, with fall turning towards winter, it was simply logical that it was smarter to establish a base of operations in the southern area of the Forest, closer to the coast, where Thassa had a warming effect on the climate. in the east, the ground itself was nearly frozen already, and a cold trend in the weather, without heat being dissipated from the warm ocean to warm the air, made for bitterly cold nights. here, to the south, the ground was still soft, and the nights were substantially warmer.*

All: *Panther Claw Lair, would be far to the north and west, but I had no plans to go anywhere near there. in my mind, the Lair was still strong and prosperous, and always would be. if otherwise, I wouldn't want to know it. having led the Lair for years, I did my best to train others to be able to take over in my absence or upon my demise, and I assumed my teaching had been effective. but, after I had broken my arm, something in me had changed. it wasn't just that, with a crooked right arm I had lost some of my skill with bows, though that was part of it. it wasn't just my age, though I was ancient by the standards of my birth-planet, and consequently bored of nearly everything, lacking the enthusiasm I had as a newbie Panther. though that was also part of it.*

All: I crouched down then, in front of the fire's warmth ... staring at the dancing flames as if entranced with its play... trying to figure out what had happened.. and why, I suddenly felt I'd been asleep.. and yet, unsure of what transpired.. my hand rose.. brushing auburn strands free of a haunted expression - unsure of what transpired and maybe a bit fearful to figure it out.. moccassins slid back.. raw hide leggings form fitting to my sinewy legs.. again, staring at the fire as if it held the answers

All: *no, it was mostly that the Lair needed a hungry, young, enthusiastic Leader, someone who, in driving herself to be her best and reach her peak, who would by example, push others to do the same. with me as Leader, others had been complacent, because I could look out for them, had been intimated that they coudn't beat me, so why try?*

All: *for years, I had put the Lair first, and it was ingrained in me to do so. and then there had come a time when I realized that putting the Lair first meant to leave it. when it was cold or rainy, sometimes I missed the comfort we had built in PClaw, but I didn't miss losing people, as PClaw steadily did. being alone wasn't as bad as losing people. as I follow the stream south towards the river, I turn my thoughts more to the here and now. this late in the season, the Summer-Panthers would be back with men somewhere, so it was unlikely I would encounter danger, but I did need to be a bit more alert to the possible presence of others, as I got nearer the river*

All: I leaned towards the small pile of wood and pulled a few larger logs and gently placed them in... embers flittered up, swirling in the dark sky overhead.. the air wasn't as cool as it had been in the past hand.. I pondered Shanda's words of the cave's location and knew that sooner or later I would find her hideout.. her's and the others.. whoever they were.. I'd moved southwards since the rise of the northern snows, already starting when I had left my territory there.. southern winds blew warmer.. and my stocks were building.. I'd been cooking the last kill most of the day and smoking the fish.. soon, I'd make my way westward.. in an attempt to find the cave she spoke of, or better yet, her own camp..

All: *I had amassed substantial wealth over time, and had stashes all over the Forest, and good personal equipment on me. black leather slacks and coat made of Tuchuk boskhide, and a Tuchuk quiva, both gifts from an old ally, a pair of short throwing spears made in Koroba and a dagger from Thentis, taken from Slavers who had tried to hunt me, and suede moccasin boats made for me by a Northern Savage whose life I had saved when he was wounded by Kur, the spears, because they were short spears, I could carry in a quiver across my back, as I carried my trusty old walking stick, a stout tur branch, with a crook and several nubs where branchlets had been cut away, which, over the years, I had learned to use more effectively as a weapon than most used steel. as I follow the stream towards where it will eventually join the river, I use the staff to check ahead of me for traps, clear brush or hanging vines from my path, and to help me balance on uneven ground. I smell smoke on the wind from the south as I continue in that direction*

All: *raven hair and black leather in the Forest night, I was all but invisible. with pale skin and blue eyes, I might stand out in the moonlight, if I moved through an area where moonbeams happened to find a gap in the canopy above, but most of the trees are tur and tem, conifers, evergreens, so even in the fall and winter, little light reaches the ground at night. my eyes are dark adapted, and my hearing attuned to the sounds of the Forest, and even in the darkness I have little trouble making my way to the south, and expect to be aware of any other predators in the vicinity, human or otherwise, before they become aware of me. maybe animals could smell me, but they presented little danger this time of year, and would mostly flee from human scent, when other game was still abundant. later, in the dead of winter, with food scarcer, this wouldn't be the case, but for now, it prety much was.*
