*I find a large tree branch that had fallen last winter from the weight of snow. It is well seasoned by now, and when I start breaking the smaller branches away, the snap rather loudly. I work quickly, making 10-12 such loud noises every minute, some louder than others. It makes quite a racket, but after 3 minutes I have a knee-high pile of kindling.*

*Getting the larger pieces for a bonfire is more difficult. I start at the thinnest part of the branch, and stand on it, about 3 feet from the end, then squat down and grasp the end with one hand and lift, causing the branch to break beneath my feet from the force of leverage exerted.*

*I repeat this same process several times, until the wood gets too thick to do this easily. It then takes both hands and a longer stretch, close to 4 feet between feet and grip, to get enough leverage to break through the branch. But since, in this position, I am also using the lifting force of my legs, when I rise from a squat, I am still able to snap the branch beneath my feet. But now the sounds of each snap are very loud, echoing through the quiet of the forest night.*
