: ...The cool air blowing in from the Thassa brushes my pigtails to one side of my body as I walk along the surfline, traveling north. I am going no place special, just enjoying being free, and having no Master, although I do reflect that the Lair Leader and Firekeeper can be very demanding at times. It is the time of the month that I need to chew sip root, and I have several of the fibrous roots clutched in my left hand. My right hand is holding my spear, at it's balance point, ready for use if necessary.

: ...I think on the last few hands, and smile with satisfaction. Things had been going well at the Lair, Taspan had been kicking ass since she returned, and the Panthers had been tightening up their skills, and attitudes. I had tried, when I was left in charge, to keep them at their level of readiness, but, some did slack off. Still, I had been told, "well done", when Taspan returned. I reflect that things could have been a lot worse, especially when the Talunas arrived and setup a Lair several pasangs to our east. I had 'negotiated' a Peace Treaty, in my own way, that had distressed Ashai. My quiva had run red for several days while we 'negotiated' through the procedure of 'knife rights'. Idly, I rub my right side, I had taken an arrow there, and had a few other scars on my body to show for my diplomatic skills.

: ..."You are a real piece of work, Izee'", I chide myself. "You could have had an easy life as the FC to a Red Savage Chief, but, no...you had to want to have things your way". The feathered ornament pinned to my left pigtail rustles against my neck, and I reach back and brush it to the side. I know that a few of my sisters think that I should put away my red Savage ways, and dress as they do. I had given it a lot of thought, but had decided that I had to maintain my identity. Plus, my Spirit Guide would leave me if I renounced my heritage, and Medicine would no longer work. I see a large rock, up the beach, and stride through the dry sand, my mocs sinking deep into the dry grains, and take a seat on it. I am in my tunicdress, but since it is warm, am not wearing the leather leggings that can go with it. I keep chewing on the piece of root as I set my spear to the side, and lay the quiver of arrows and the loosely strung bow beside it. I unsling my parfleche from my right shoulder, and set it on my lap.

: ...The Thassa is calm, at the moment, and waves gently paint the sand with their moisture. Further out, the horizon is level, and there are no signs of any ships, or anything else out to sea. The bright, clear blue skies of Gor, that astound newly arrived barbarians, are speckled with a few clouds that add a richness to the scene. At my back, I hear the sound of the wind gently rustling the trees, and the sounds of the Jungle animals. I take a moment to close my enormous, dark brown eyes, and listen for a while. All I hear are natural sounds, and then, after a few ehn, I hear a whistle from a scout, and a few responses from others. They are on a hunt, and prey has been spotted. I lick my full lips with anticipation, it sounds like the Lair will feast on fresh tarsk this evening. My fondness for raw liver was well known to my sisters, and I know that part of it will be wrapped in leaves and kept for me, although the remainder will be taken to the cooking hut and fried, with onions and sliced suls.

: ...I open my eyes, and take a moment to gaze out on the Thassa, again. I look up and down the beach, and see no signs of humanity, or of animal. Mirage had been circling above me for most of the morning, but she had turned inland, and was on errands of her own. I reach into my parfleche, and reverently remove my Medicine Pouch. It has a drawstring, and at times I will wear it around my neck, especially when going into battle. The soft, white leather pouch, made of kaililiak hide, is decorated with sewn beads and painted with designs. My tapered fingers open it, and I reach into the soft fabric and begin to remove the contents, and set them on the rock beside me.

: ...First, is a small white rock...this is for "White Painted Woman", the Mother of all of the Yellow Knives. Second is a fragment of jet black obsidian...this is "Killer of Enemies", "White Painted Woman's son. A piece of carefully folded rence paper is next, it holds ground maize, to represent Gor, the Mother who feeds us all. Another wrapped packet of rence paper follows, it holds 'Holy Pollen', gathered from a maize plant, that shows the healing aspect of Gor. A piece of clear quartz crystal is next, it is the Thassa, and all water on Gor, including the waterfall I discovered. A small flight feather from Mirage is set on the rock, it is the spirit of the skies, from which all of Gor depends...the air, the rain, the sun. A small piece of tabuk hide follows, this is the closest that I could find to represent my Spirit Guide, the 'Deer'. I had been told that there were no 'Deer' on Gor, but that the 'Deer', like 'Coyote', 'Buffalo', 'Wolf', and others, were from 'The Memory', which all of we Red savages shared. I had seen a 'Deer', in visions and dreams, and the closest animal on Gor that I had seen that looked like her was a tabuk. Finally, and with great reverence, I take out a nugget of pure gold, that I had found in the pond beneath my waterfall. It represents my sisters, my girl, and my True, their value to me, and that I would easily give up my life to protect them.

: ...I sit, motionless, for several hands of ehn, and regard my Medicine. When I feel ready, when the Spirit World has finally entered, I stand, staying on the rock...feeling it connect me to the bedrock of this wonderful planet, and lift my arms, as I face out to the Thassa.

: ...I finish my prayer, it was addressed to all who I loved...even those who were not of the Lair...and I watched for a sign that it had been accepted. After a few ihn, a flight of some birds travel by, and I see Mirage suddenly appear, and swoop on them, and grab one in her merciless talons. She gives a scream of triumph, and then circles slowly, heading towards me. I think that this was a good response from the Spirit World, Mirage had reminded me of my duties as 'Huntress'. I carefully gather up my items, and replace them into the Medicine Pouch, in the same order that I had removed them. As I set the gold nugget in, I briefly kiss it, and then seal the pouch, and set it in my parfleche. Mirage lands nearby, and shrieks at me, clutching her kill. I take out my quiva, and, after some tugging and pulling, take the large vulo from her. I split open the head, so she can access the brains, and open the viscera. I had also taken out a padded glove, and was holding the vulo in it, so that I would keep all of my fingers. I let Mirage feed, and don't really care if she decides to devour the entire vulo, I have heard the whistles of triumph from the scouts...we will feast tonight on tarsk. I lick my full lips as I anticipate the taste of the raw liver
