Re: DaNang Harbor
Charlie I am a Plankowner and was on the USS Horne "DLG 30" when we anchored in DaNang Harbor in June 1968. I remember Capt. Stan Turner (later Admiral Turner, later Director of the CIA) leaving for Washington and Capt. Archie Lupia taking command, after shooting down the 1st. Mig.. We were at Condition III Zulu the entire time because Viet Cong were cutting the screws off and trying to plant charges under the boats. As I recall some of the other officers went ashore for briefings before we headed back to Yankee Station - North SAR. If you have any other information regarding ship's movements, it would be appreciated. I remember seeing and smelling the contaminated fuel floating in the harbor.I have been in the AO registry since 2000 but cannot get the VA to acknowledge we were there.I now have some AO symptoms and need to figure out how we can get our ship listed as having been exposed to these chemicals so we/our shipmates can make benefit claims.
