The spanish posters in this board can elaborate with more authority, but, from my point of view, it was Juan Carlos who "alienated" his wife and humiliated her several times.
The last humiliation came from the revelations of one of his mistresses, Barbara Rey.
JC and Sofia's marriage was a façade wedding for decades where both of them agreed to play the "happy families".
That was particularly convenient for JC, who took all the benefits of the agreement.
Sofia hold on as much as she could, doing justice to her cognome La Professional, but, apparently, she wants more distance from JC than F & L.
Having said that, when both of them have to attend any event, she deserves an Oscar for continuing to play the loving wife.
And we don't know if JC wishes her presence in the neighborhood...
RTP recently aired the series "Ena".
Reality or fiction, when in exile and after their separation, Alfonso XIII is pictured always casting Ena away, even on his deathbed.
It could be in the Borbon blood
