To be fair, his father did not have a surname, and his dynastic name would have been rather odd in the English version: Happycastle or Happyborough as the´translation of Glücksborg.
I thought it was because he wanted to make a career in the British Navy, and thus needed to become a British citizen and therefore needed a surname. (Nobody seems to have realized that he was already entitled to become a British citizen due to the Princess Sophia Naturalization Act.
I believe that he did not formally adopt the name Mountbatten until February pr March 1947, some three months or so before the announcement of his engagement
