Re: History of Drakes Creek
I have a reference in my work papers that I think came from "In the Hills of the Pennyroyal: A History of Allen County, Kentucky From 1815 to 1880". This says that a March 6, 1896 Allen County newspaper gave the following account of how Trammel's Fork got its name......"when Allen County was still a part of Logan and Warren counties and Daniel Boone was in his prime, he and one McFadden and his two sons, built a station or fort on the east bank of the Barren River. These men were soon joined by others at the station and all spent their time in hunting game with which the county abounded. On one of these expeditions when they were near the spot where Trammel flows into Drake's Creek, they were attacked by Indians and a man named Trammel and a man named Drake were killed. Thus, the two creeks were given their names in memoriam." The authors footnotes that this article was reprinted in Allen County News, August 25, 1965. Phillip and Nicolas Trammell came into Kentucky as "long hunters" in the 1870's from Virginia and were very likely to have been with and/or known Daniel Boone. One of the female Trammell ancestors married into the Boone family and was no doubt related to Phillip and Nicholas, either a close or distant relative. Nicholas, which I mentioned in the previous post, was killed by Indians in 1784. Phillip remained in Tennessee and Kentucky until the early 1800's at which time he relocated to Illinois. Hope this helps.
