I sort of thought "Federal Yellow" is a bit light as yellows go. It is about the same as "School Bus Yellow," which is a Federal standard, btw, while there is no color on the "Federal Standards 595" list by that name. There are several yellows, however. Among them is the Orange Yellow I mentioned earlier. I am going to have a small quantity mixed and see how it matches vs. using an automotive color match system. I don't mind doing this research. It would be nice if we could pin down this detail for restorers.
It makes sense, to me at least, that since Dietz wanted to sell the Night Watch and others to communities and large contractors with multi unit buying power, that they would use a Federally recognized and standardized color. It would also make their product acceptable to the Federal Government without changing the color.
It always amazes me how decisions like what color to use on a lantern are made by who might buy them. I guess it makes sense, though.
I'll add to this as I learn more.
Best wishes,
Les
