As I understand it, the invitation was extended to Trump. Why he accepted is obvious. The U.S. has allies it wishes to retain. As to how the Queen feels about him is beside the point. World leaders have to deal with many people they do not like. That goes for the U.S. President who has to entertain those he can't stand. World leaders cannot take into account the ever-changing opinions of the public or their obvious biases.
(I have not read anywhere any complaints about the Middle Eastern Sheik who is the topic of a messy divorce to the former Princess of Jordan. Yet he seems to be welcome at the gilded tables of European royalty.)
As to how the U.S. electorate looks at all this, the truth is this: the average American does not know anything about this visit to Denmark. I have not seen it any of the news reports. And the average American knows next to nothing about the European royal houses, except for QEII. My guess is - if someone would tell them about it - they would be no happier than many of you. They would consider it a waste of taxpayer money to send the U.S.President globe-trotting when we still have many problems at home to solve. So you can say Trump would have the same problem as the Queen of Denmark. He would have to explain to the public his reasoning. Neither he nor the Queen can take into account the public's sentiments on the matter: they have to look at the long view. There will be other Presidents just as there will be other monarchs. No one wants to set a precedent which will make future diplomacy unwieldy.
I know but Trump has decided to brand any type of social democratic policies as socialism and his followers see it as just a few footsteps away from the antichrist.
It's curious that Trump is going to visit Denmark when one of his potential opponents in the presidential race Bernie Sanders has used Denmark as a positive example of how to do things. The left wing of the Democratic party in the US is basically what in Europe is the central left usually represented by social democratic parties.
Though there is a curious trend happening where left and right are mixing up traditional policies in Europe these days. The new Danish government is one of them.
Maybe the Socialist female PM of Denmark thought it time to show Trump what social democracy and emancipation can bring a nation?
I wouldn’t call Mette Frederiksen a socialist - she is a social democrat, which is an important difference.
