Only about a third of the "excess deaths" we've seen according to ONS data have mentioned Covid on the death certificate.
My best bet is that a group of experts who have form for wildly over-estimating the impact of epidemics, have wildly over-estimated the impact of an epidemic, spurred on by the horrendous scenes we saw in Italy.
We've cleared the hospitals out and built extra capacity that we simply didn't need.
I understand about erring on the side of caution, and who wouldn't if you were in their shoes, but the reality is that we've made extra capacity that we didn't need, the result of which could end up costing more lives than the Coronavirus epidemic itself.
There should absolutely be an enquiry into government actions throughout this crisis, but we should also have an enquiry into why a model that hadn't been peer reviewed and had form for getting estimates wrong was used as the basis for such a devastating policy, the impact of which will be felt for years.
