The BBC article also states:
"But Prince Edward's former title of Earl of Wessex will now go to his son, the 15-year-old Viscount Severn."
So, does that change happen for the present Viscount Severn immediately - or at some point in the future? Is the BBC assuming something which has not been formally announced yet regarding the Wessex title?
He will use it as a courtesy title, just like the son of the Duke of Gloucester is Earl of Ulster and the son of the Duke of Kent is Earl of St. Andrews.
Precisely. And if the new Earl of Wessex has a son while the Duke of Edinburgh is still alive, that son will be styled Viscount Severn.
