If Edward had wanted a Ducal title, he could have gotten one upon marriage. He seemed content with the Earl of Wessex title and his role so far. What has changed? Taking over as custodian of his father's legacy does not require the DoE title. Utter nonsense if you ask me.

It is quite clear that his parents wanted him to become Duke of Edinburgh eventually; giving him a ducal title at marriage and then doubling up with Edinburgh later (because it was agreed that he would get Edinburgh, this is a fact) wasn’t the plan.
