'it could only finish without a finish' , totally agree with you there ,
Jerry Patrick Brown talks about it here http://www.hum90.com/jerry_patrick_brown.htm

I actually didn't mind the final episode to be honest, maybe because I'm a writer and I've studied the war a lot I could see my own fourth season in my head. If it had gone on would we then have disagreements about what was written about our favourite characters (percell and Ruiz being my favourites and also 'main characters' of the series). The only way the series could end would be without a real end unless the characters continued to re-up until the final embassy pull out in 1975. If we then followed them into civilian life...what would we like them to be (I've written one story about that. I like it, others would disagree)? No one likes a favourite show to end, but at least given the subject, it really could only finish without a finish, or, if you like, with a cliff hanger. Previous Message
When I first saw the series finale, I was shocked and gutted in how it ended the show. That was when I first found this site in 2013 and just had to vent in disbelief.
In particular, there was no closure for Zeke, Myron and Taylor - the main characters and fan favourites.
This show really needed a Season 4, preferably back in the US and how that perhaps maybe affected them more than the Vietnam War itself. Fans rallied for a final Season 4 for 'China Beach' around the same time, and that show managed to bring closure to both the War, the characters and their futures. Tour of Duty really needed the same treatment, particularly after we fans had followed and became so engaged in the characters.
For what it's worth, looking for answers a couple of years back, I came across an LA Times article from November 1988 (no longer publicly available online), in which Zev Braun and Rick Husky mentioned that there was 'a five-year plan mapped out at "Tour of Duty's" inception'.
Further, Steve Duncan mentioned in his HUM90 interview that there was a 'series bible', and there was talk of a fourth season before it was cancelled.
It would be really awesome if it was released, and we finally found how the show would have continued and properly ended. Particularly, for each of the guys.
