Its always been a sore point to some the way it finished. Stan said that his character was going to be visited to see how he was getting on.
And the writer of the final show talks a little about on his page here on the site.

pretty much my post is what would have been like if it would have been a season 4 well the details seem kind of sketchy according to the Way season 3 ended which wasn't the best series finale I felt like season 3 was really incomplete and Sloppy the way that it ended I really wonder to this day what would have been like if there would have been a season 4 a tour of Duty
