Re: Memories Jouett/ 1980-1984
I also remember things that most people likely forgot.......... Re-enlistment bonus's of $12000.00, then requesting closed Captains Mast and revealing to the Capt. that they were homosexual's, receiving a medical discharge(Honorable), and getting out $12000.00 richer!!..... Or how 'bout the idiot BT (can't remember his name) who re-enlisted, got the $12000.00 bonus, went out and bought a brand new Trans-Am, and then wrecked the car in less than one month back in Long Beach.....After all these incidents fleet wide, the Navy realized that you can't give a 22 year old kid that kind of money with out expecting some trouble. They changed the program, doling out the money proportionally on each anniversarry of the enlistment date............ Remember, this was back in the era of the $3000.00 toilet seat and the $400.00 hammer that DoD had no problems paying for. Pres. Regan wanted a 600 ship Navy and by God he was going to get it no matter what the cost. It was as if the Treasury had handed over the keys to the Pentagon and said, "Here Boys, have some fun"............ I loved the ships welfare and recreation committee. They arranged the San Diego Padre games for free if you wore your uniform. We even got the duty driver to give us rides to and from Jack Murphy stadium. They had this program that if you attended "any" event, all you had to do was bring back your ticket stubs and the Welfare and Rec. committee would reimburse 1/2 the ticket costs in cash on the mess decks!!..............Per diem travel/ food reimbusement was another program that was frought with waste and abuse. If you had training away from the command, the Navy covered all the expenses even though there was adequate BOQ and BOS available. When I got out of the Navy, they paid me by the mile to return to New York by Private owned vehicle which was 4 times the cost of a discount airline ticket!! I even remember being on a working party in after stearing when some imbecile officer told a Chief to deep six everything that wasn't tied down so they could requisition more gear when we returned to port......... Ships parties and division parties were fun. They always rented out something very nice so wives and girlfriends could attend........
