Re: Memories Jouett/ 1980-1984
Yea, I was aboard for '82-'83 westpac and '84 westpac cruises. I was supposed to get out in May of 1984 just before the cruise. I had an opportunity to work the '84 summer Olympics in L.A. that summer, but my connection with ABC television told me I had to arrange my own housing - very difficult without a car. The command wanted me to re-enlist. They were short qualified people for the cruise. I told the Chief engineer that I would be willing to extend my enlistment if I was guaranteed ER09 and no duty days while inport during the cruise. They o.k.'d my request and I signed on for the cruise "for the convenience of the government." Little did I know that the last part of the cruise was going to be spent in the I.O. I left the Jouett while we were along side the USS Samuel Gompers. From there I flew chopper to Oman and caught a C-141 transport to Diego Garcia, then on to P.I., Kadena in Okinawa, Elmendorf in Alaska, S.F. Cal., finally to Linburg field in San Diego. The trip took one month (lots of fun though!!).
