last new north/south main line was built between 1893 and 1899 with 92 miles of new track, bridges, tunnels and stations. built by the great central railway and designed as a high speed line at the time of building. all thats left is a few miles of heritage steam railway based at loughborough. the country changed in the 60 odd years of use and whats to say it will not change again in the 60 years after HS2 is built. life has changed in the last 30 years where very few in the 1980,s commuted across the pennines both ways for work.
