There is a definite issue with capacity during rush hour. 4pm to 7pm getting out of London.
You're just looking at this from a Manchester - London perspective. 2 hours to London from Stockport is probably OK, but the HS2 project goes right up to Edinburgh. HS2 should be almost eliminating internal flights.
It links Edinburgh, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, York, East Midlands and London down the East Coast.
Down the west coast, if link from London to Birmingham is build, this will opens up Stafford, Crewe, Warrington, Preston, Lancaster, Carlisle and Glasgow to high speed. From Birmingham northwards, the existing network would be used.
A separate phase of HS2 links up Newcastle, Bradford, Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield, Leeds, York, Darlington and Durham, providing the connectivity we need between the northern cities. This will deliver a lot of what you are talking about.
To the South West, Cardiff and Bristol will be opened up to an upgraded fast route, which can carry HS2 trains.
We can't carry on living the 19th century with a Victorian transport system. Other countries have moved on, France, Spain, etc. We need to do likewise!!
