Re: Spanish royal surname after Leonor
There have been so many families, both royal and noble, where the names have changed and dynasties perpetuated through the female line. For example in the Byzantine empire, the various regnant dynasties consciously and deliberately combined and substituted names frequently. The Romanoff direct male line died out with Peter II in 1730 but the dynasty is still called Romanoff. The heirs of Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus) have long been called Colon de Carvajal, even though the direct male line died out in 1572, and now there are several families, whose first names are Colon de Carvajal (including the present Duke of Veragua) who descend through two or more female successions. In the UK the House of Windsor will continue to be the name of the dynasty.
