Mae might have cancer

Mae has been on Lupron for years, even before we adopted her, to keep reproductive problems at bay. Recently, it seemed to stop working.

The vet did an ultrasound and found a mass in or on her ovaries that she said looks like cancer. We are trying the Desdorelin implant now. Surgery is a very risky option. This came up fast. We are devastated and hoping the implant shrinks the mass. Our late Duke had the same implant for testicular cancer and it shrunk his tumor to nothing. He had 3 more years of good living before the tumor grew back at age 28. Mae is almost 15.

Lupron and Desdorelin are similar. So we hope, but don’t expect, it’ll work. Mae is such a sweet cockatiel. She loves to be held and petted and has such a charming personality. Cookie seems to know something is wrong. Wish us luck.

Saying many prayers for Mae, and for you and cookie. I remember when Duke had the implant, and that it worked very well for him.

Thank you all for your comments. Mae seems to be bouncing back at least for now. Having over 20ml of fluid drained from her abdomen with a syringe had to be stressful. But she must feel so much better without it. Her appetite is returning as is a more normal posture and mood. We are hopeful the implant will work.

It's bringing back memories of Shiloh's last couple of weeks where I was bringing her in just about every other day to get her lipoma aspirated. We'd gotten to the point where I was going to start doing the aspiration myself. Her vet showed me how. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I've often thought that she had a mass on her ovary but instead of her abdomen swelling it was shunting to her lipoma and directing our direction there instead of exploring possible other issues.

I'm glad Mae's feeling better, poor thing.
