Mrs Braren lifted the girl up, so she could give the King her flowers, but the King lifted the girl up, and they rode together a short trip.
One month later, Johanne received a gift from the King. In a letter to her adopted father, the King wrote: "Please give Johanne this picture so she will remember 'our ride' in southern Jylland. Just as I ask you to keep me informed about special occassions in her life, like confirmation and wedding.
When she was confirmed six years later, she received a gold bracelet from the King.
The King saw little Johanne as a symbol of the returned "daughter", Northern Schleswig, and hence kissed and embraced her. Unfortunately the girl herself was rather frightened by all the commotion. In the years that followed, the King and Queen always paid a visit to Johanne's family when they were in that part of the country, and Queen Alexandrine kept in touch also after the King's death. For her wedding Johanne received a silver centrepiece with the King's monogram, and her firstborn daughter also received a royal gift for her confirmation.
