Northern Slesvig had been returned to Denmark after a referendum. Denmark had been forced to submit Slesvig and Holstein to Prussia in 1864 after a war.
It was quite a big chunk of land that was lost in 1864, the year after Christian IX became king - so one can understand why it meant so much for his grandson, Christian X, to get a least some of the land back in 1920.
The first map shows Denmark before 1864 (including Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg).
The second map shows Denmark between 1864 and 1920.
The third map shows Denmark after 1920.
