Re: Sigvard Bernadotte
That is a very good point! Thanks for the insight!
I have always found it strange that there were different solutions for the son of Oscar II: prince Oscar, later prince Bernadotte and the grandsons of Gustav V. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that the spouse of Oscar was a member of the nobility and that the spouses of Lennart, Sigvard and Carl Johan were not (Carl Johans second wife was but that was long after he lost his place in the succession).
Sigvard pushed for having his princely titel aknowledged in the 1980ies but King Carl Gustaf said now. There were some strained relations after that. I guess the king would not do it because of prince Bertil who had sacrificed much of his personal happines and not married his Lilian until 1976 when rules were less strict. Bertil remained HRH prince of Sweden and Lilian became an HRH princess. In 1983 Sigvard started to call himself Prince Sigvard Bernadotte but this was not officially sanctioned by the king.
Sigvard said that the title Prince was his birth right. I think it is strange that nobody ever gave the natural answer to his claim: His official title was never Prins av Sverige . He was Sveriges Arvfurste (Sweden's Hereditary Prince) and Hertig av Uppland (Duke of Uppland). There was only one Prince, and that was the Crown Prince. The male dynasts were called Prince XX, but that was not their official title. The King could not give back the title Sveriges Arvfurste to Sigvard, because Sigvard did no longer have a hereditary right to be in line of succession. If the King had given Sigvard a Princely title, that would have been a new title. Since the introduction of absolute primogeniture succession, the title Sveriges Arvfurste was abolished. Bertil and Carl Philip became Sveriges Prins. (Of course the rift in the Royal Family could have been avoided, if King Gustaf V had followed his father King Oscar II's example with Oscar, who became Prince Oscar Bernadotte, and given Lennart, Sigvard and Carl Johan permission to be styled Prince Bernadotte, but that is history now.)
