Well the fact that everybody within 20 yards of him berates him constantly I personally would take the opinions of say 40 people over the opinion of 1, its got to the point where people now just laugh at him every time he opens his mouth. Whilst I am not sure that Woots is first division standard you have to take into account that we dont play a style that suits Woots style

Thank you for drawing that to my attention however, there’s 3 of their players off-side and 3 of ours playing the goal scorer on.
For me, our 3, including Wootton, have done their job and moved forward leaving their men off-side. If anyones at fault it’s whoever’s marking the goal scorer!
Wootton seams to be taking the blame (unfairly) from certain quarters.
As for him not scoring himself, for large parts of the game he was the lone striker playing against 3 defenders, a near impossible task.

He is and I'm defending him, however he's the deepest of our players here and is the one playing the goalscorer onside. The other three Rotherham players are irrelevant.

I'm not blaming Wootton for it, as we're talking inches, but it's a fact that he's the one there who was deepest and playing the man on.

I don’t see how the Rotherham player directly in front of Ben is irrelevant, he’s causing a problem for Ben by being so close and in his line of sight, he’s clearly having an influence therefore he’s offside.

I think it's because he's slightly to Hinchliffe's left and the ball is directly in front so he's not impeding his view.

The ref was in a good position to observe this.

It’s the actual rule I have a problem with on the line of sight, does the referee check Bens actual eye balls to see which way they are facing, what if the keeper has a “turned eye”, a medical condition, does the keeper have no peripheral vision, i doubt it. It is a rule that has been brought in by suits without any thought.

Physicality; his job is to win aerial balls, either by bringing the ball down or by flicking headers on, which in turn feeds the wide players in Barry and Collar/Tanto/Diamond. Yes, he also needs to score goals but that isn't the yard stick for his role. He's been involved several times this season in creating goals, either directly assisting or being involved in the move initially, playing this role.

There's not a player in League One who is asked to play that role and wins even the majority of the aerial balls played into them; it's a constant physical battle with centre backs.

As I said further down, if you don't like that system then fine, but Wootton isn't doing it particularly badly.

That's his purpose within the system; he's done it several times this season that has led to goals.

As I say, if you don't like that system then criticise the system, but Wootton's not doing a bad job of what's being asked of him. You're not going to get a striker in that role winning the majority of the aerial balls he's battling for League One.

By the time the ball gets to the goalscorer, he's the only one standing in front of Ben and he was onside when the ball was played. The way the ball was hit into the ground meant it took longer than normal to get to the goalacorer, so the offside players were well out of Ben's way.

I was as angry as anyone at the time but replays have since proven the officials right.

It’s at the time the ball was struck not when it arrives with the player. Ben’s view is clearly obstructed. It’s offside and the ref and his entourage were brain donors.

Nearly sent off Woots for fook all too.

It is, but it's arguable how much they were interfering with play and my point was that by the time the ball reaches the goalscorer, the other three are nowhere near the ball, Ben or the goalscorer, which shows how little they were interfering with play.

The officials made the right call.

The player that scored was in an onside position when the ball was played. The other players were in offside positions but weren't interfering with play.

When the ball is headed in there is no-one obscuring Hinchliffe's view so no offside.

Once again the officials were getting pelters on here but were correct on this occasion.

Which I would contest he is, how does anybody know which direction Ben is looking, a keeper does have to watch various players in the box, its a stupid rule brought about by suits who have never played

He has to look at the ball and the incoming players, to assess his reaction to what may happen, a humans peripheral vision is 100 degrees without moving the eyes or head at all

It's the rules that are wrong.

I watched Vardy run through on goal onto a through ball last night, took a touch in the box, Ortega took him out. Blatant penalty.

Then the flag goes up for offside.

What if Vardy had got injured and missed the rest of the season? No punishment for City?

If the flag goes up straight away there's no issue.

Stupid rule, needs changing.

Been saying since day one of that one that a player will end up seriously injured when the flag should have gone up earlier

If the flag goes up and he's actually onside then they can't call it back, that's why they do it. You're potentially denying the attacking team a legitimate chance if the player is actually on.

I don't buy the 'what if they get injured' argument against it, as players could be injured in any situation in a match.

I haven't seen it but was talking more generally as to why they let the play go; I think it's a good rule given the VAR review that will follow.
