I still drink Cobra and it is half decent as far as mas produced lager goes - much better out of a bottle rather than on draught.

Then again if you are eating vindaloo and lime pickle what do you need a great tasting lager for?

Back in the sixties/seventies my grandad had a Boddies pub in Bredbury. I spent lots of time up there staying with them (on holiday from Portwood).

At the time when lager came in he used to call it onion water and refused to promote it.

At 9:45pm he'd get about twenty pints of Boddies bitter poured (3/4) and nearly ready, then the steelworks opposite shift finished at 10:00pm and it was chaos as the workers piled in to quench their thirsts.

Couldn't pull pints fast enough between then and last orders

For those of you who are Early Doors fans, yes, there were a couple of friendly cops that frequently called in for refreshments so last orders and drinking up time was flexible

As someone who served pints of Robbie’s back in the 80s at one of the finest hostelries in Stockport, I know full well how accurate Early Doors is!

I definitely wasn’t pulling a pint at 2am when a police seargent walked in and sat down for a pint with us!

Terrific programme Early Doors. A mate of mine Phil Mealey co-wrote it and played Duffy. I spoke to him fairly recently and he said it had been a big hit but only in Northern parts of the country. Down South apparently it had gone down like a lead balloon

I recall a police raid on Fairey's Social Club in the early hours of the morning in the late seventies. One of the coppers went into the snooker room and tapped Norman Mason on the shoulder as he was taking his shot. Without turning round Norman said "It's ok Frank, I've still got a couple behind the curtain"

After hours drinking were legendary at the Red Bull on Hillgate. Many of them OB with it being virtually next door to the old police station on Lee Street.

However, on the rare occasions it was raided, strangely there was never anyone in there drinking!

The police used to have a bar in the old police station , a sort of social club.
They had after hrs.
