But that wasn't what you meant as you mentioned the space, meaning solar farms.
Also, the vast distances mean that solar farms aren't connected to the grid, so any surplus is wasted. Batteries can provide a small percentage but they still need backing up by fossil fuels when the panels aren't producing.
Australia could manufacture its own PV panels but the carbon footprint would be too high so they send the materials to China and ignore the impact on the world. Same with manufacturing steel. The amount of iron ore being sent to China from WA only to come back is mind boggling.
