A Quote ??

Recently I was looking thru Jim's music catalogue,just to see if anything may be there I have not come across before. On one site I found a statement from someone in Britain who claims to be an expert on Jim's musical history. A guy by the name of Steve Morehead made this statement. Quote..'By 1965, Jim Reeves had more albums available than Elvis Presley and was eventually to accumulate LP sales in excess of 80 million.'

Really don't know what to think about the Elvis claim and the 80 million in LP sales, seems a bit high for the 60's. He does not mention if this represented European sales etc. Can anyone add to this as to it's accuracy. Thanks everyone, please jump in with an answer. Be good to hear from our many friends here on the Forum. It has been much too quiet of late...

Don't know about the 80 million, but remember in the 60's Jim had 8 albums in the UK top 20 at the same time! And I don't believe this has ever been beaten, or even equalled! Halcyon days.

Between 1956 and 1965, Elvis had 23 LP's released in the US. Jim had 22 if you include the RCA Camden budget LP's. RCA didn't start releasing Elvis albums on Camden until 1969, and they eventually released more on Elvis than they did on Jim. As for Jim's LP sales by 1965, I suppose it's possible he could have reached 80 million, especially with so many albums in the top 20 at the same time in Europe. I would imagine that a figure like 80 million albums would represent worldwide sales for Jim back in 1965, but Steve wasn't clear about this...

Thanks Mike for the research. A bit of an update from the original post. As you mentioned the guy was pretty vague. I still think 80 million from the early to mid 60's is still a bit high but not totally unreachable. Thanks Martin for your reply... Anyone else ?

And speaking of Elvis, as most will recognize that 84 years ago today, Elvis was born. Jan.8, 1935 is a day that the world would be blessed by a great singer just as a few years earlier Jim Reeves would share the same qualities. Born on August 20, 1923.

Yes, Roy, Elvis' 84th birthday just passed yesterday, and he is more popular than ever. I would have given anything to be at one of the Louisiana Hayride shows during the brief period when Jim and Elvis were on the show together.I came across a picture of an old poster on line recently that was an ad for one of these shows. The tickets were only a dollar and were available at a local coffee shop. Ah, the good old days when things were simple. I wonder if there is anyone out there who is still around that was lucky enough to see Jim and Elvis on the same bill at one of these shows...

Hey Mike,
As one who is quite well versed with the works of Elvis I have a question for you.You are quite familiar I assume with the duet involving Elvis and Martina McBride (Blue Xmas)featured on Youtube. Which of the 22 complete songs of JR shown in the anthology of Jim in your opinion would be the most appropriate one to use in a duet with a female singer.Which singer still alive would you use in a similar project to that of Elvis and Martina?? The finished product would be one step( maybe more no doubt ?) beyond the video involving Ms. Holen and Jim that was produced by Arne and Larry in Norway.

Hi Paul. In case you don't know, the Elvis/Martina McBride "duet" is from a CD that was released a few years back of Elvis Christmas duets, pairing many of todays popular female artists with Elvis on some of his classic songs from the two Christmas LP's he recorded in 1957 and 1971. As for your question, of all the songs included on the Jim Reeves Anthology, I think a good choice for a new "duet" with Jim would be "Losing Your Love" and I think Carrie Underwood would sound great with Jim on this one...
