Since that time, another memories came to mind that are much less vague.
Back in the 60's, while in High School, computers were just coming into the fore and were still somewhat of a novelty.
I think I mentioned this in a post once before, but I listened at night, to a radio broadcast where "computers" were going to evaluate "the best of" on a number of subjects.
One was boxing, and at the time Muhammad Ali, formerly Cassius Clay, was very controversial. The computer narrowed the finalists down to Muhammad Ali and Rocky Marciano. Marciano won naturally because at the time he was undefeated and Ali had lost one bout. I think ulterior motives could also be applied to the decision.
The "Computer" also narrowed down the greatest Male Country singers to Eddy Arnold and Jim Reeves. I was all a dither because some of my high school friends preferred to Arnold to Reeves.
The final decision was announced and Reeves won. I was thrilled.
I note today that Eddy Arnold, does not seem to have the following, or interest, that Jim Reeves has on the internet or elsewhere.
Although I like many of Arnolds songs, it appears the computer decision back in the 60's was the right one.
