Although we were seeing each other for two years, the decision to marry was almost overnite and there was no reason it had to be rushed. It was to have been a city hall thing but I wanted to be married in church. The normal bans announcement was dispensed with because I told the priest I would marry in a civil service if we couldn't marry on the one day I had off. It was pouring rain that morning and he had to drive people to the church and was late getting there. The Aunt and Uncle I was living with at the time had prepared a little get-together after the service. My parents and friends were there but his parents left from the church to go to work. We didn't even have a place of our own yet and were going to stay at their apartment until we found one but were going to spend the weekend in Atlantic City. They planned another little get-together with his relatives that evening. Instead of leaving after the food was served for the long drive, one of the relatives suggested playing cards and that's what he and his family did. I did not join in. They played for what seemed hours while I steamed but didn't want to start an argument. I finally had enough and opened my mouth.
If that isn't pitiful, I don't what is.
