When the House of Lords was initially 'reformed' to remove the automatic rights of hereditary peers to sit, all hereditary peers who had themselves been elevated (ie the first of that creation) were offered life peerages. The first Earl of Snowdon was one such, and his acceptance of a life peerage was considered controversial at the time.
