William may opt to change the ceremony, if he does i do hope he retains formal wear. I'd hate to see him and Catherine in daywear on those thrones in the House of Lords. I know it happened a few times during the reign of Elizabeth II but it looked wrong to me.
Besides im curious to see how the procession goes with both the king and the queen next to each other having their trains carried by pages.
I am confident that a gradually introduced more modern approach to these ceremonies of state could work just as well. Where does this deep rooted fear of change come from? That the UK and its monarchy will loose its lustre and soul when that ostentatious and uncomfortable crown is not worn apart from the coronation? Some would argue that wearing something called the Imperial State Crown during the opening of Parliament in 2023 is insulting. Fearing that people won't feel proud of being British or their institutions if the King and his Lords are bareheaded and robe less to me signals a mortal sense of insecurity not strength. I feel that masking that insecurity with continued ancient stage play simply makes people mock rather than respect the institution of monarchy and in the end it will have a reverse effect and outcome. Change and adept with confidence is what I say!
The State Opening of Parliament is a ceremony with historical ritual and symbolic significance for the governance of the United Kingdom. In one place there are assembled the members of all three branches of government, of which the Monarch is the nominal head in each part. The Monarch, together with the House of Commons and the House of Lords constitutes the legislature. His Majesty's Ministers and members of the Monarch's Privy Council constitute the Executive. His Majesty's Judges, although not members of either House, are summoned to attend and represent the judiciary. The State Opening shows the governance of the United Kingdom and also the separation of powers. The importance of international relations is also represented through the presence in the Chamber of the Corps Diplomatique. So, the prescence of the Monarch wearing the crown is important. Her late Majesty wore the crown until it became to difficult for her to do so. The King, I am sure, will wear it. We will see the return of some glitter.
