The word "crown" has been used very often in the past to refer to other varieties of head ornaments worn by royal ladies. For example, on page 436 of the Pope-Hennessy biography of Queen Mary she is reported telling her Aunt Augusta "What I liked best was wearing Grandmama's crown..." for the first opening of parliament by George V in 1911. In fact, Queen Mary wore what we usually know as Queen Victoria's Regal Circlet. (Her own crown had not yet been modified.) So I decided to look into what the ILN (Illustrated London News) said about the opening of parliament by George VI in 1937. And yes, Queen Elizabeth did wear her crown without arches. The first pic is from a photo but the others are illustrations. |
