Her first visit to Edinburgh and Scotland was with her husband Prince Albert in 1842.
This tartan dress was worn by Queen Victoria and is now on display at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
The couple arrived on 1 September 1842 at Granton Harbour. Again, like her Uncle, they had been delayed a day due to the weather. They were met by the Duke of Buccleuch (who organised the visit), Sir Robert Peel and other City functionaries. Again like her Uncle she and Albert did not stay at the Palace but at Dalkeith House. This visit was different from her Uncle's 20 years earlier. It was essentially a private holiday visit. There were not many events. Queen Victoria's journals are a priceless source for this visit. The couple fell in love with Edinburgh and it's surroundings on this visit.
Again there was no Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication. At the time of the visit Queen Victoria was into the 5th year of her reign.
We look to Scotland for all our ideas of civilisation.377
