I had heard that too that King John was called Prince John before his succession. Yet reading that the current way of styling and giving the titles to the British Royal Family didn't start until the reign of King George I it does make me wonder how titles and styles were done prior to George I.

King John the Lackland was always known as Prince John during her brother's reign AFAIK
