In 1494, Prince Henry at age of 3 was made a Knight of the Bath. The day after the ceremony, he was created Duke of York and a month or so later made Warden of the Scottish Marches. The reason for giving such appointments to a child was to enable his father, Henry VII, to retain personal control of lucrative positions and not share them with established families. So, from the age of 3 the future Henry VIII was the Duke of York.
