Help needed with unifying articulation

I got comments from all UIL judges saying articulation from my band sounds muddy, fuzzy, unclear, etc. Similar comments regarding style which I assume is related. I'm working on improving my pedagogy in this regard but need some tips from seasoned veterans.

Most of my teaching is done in the full band setting (sectionals on occasion but some logistics out of my control prevent those from happening consistently).

What are your go-to phrases that get all instruments to articulate how you want them to? Any specific articulation exercise I should be doing in daily drill every day?

Thanks for the recommendations everyone. I definitely need to do more down the line playing. With being in the full band so much I neglect doing this but I know it will help a lot. I also suspect my students are not breathing big enough/using fast enough air at the start of each note which is probably not helping at all

You need to pick a set of syllables and stick to it.

My opinion is that the syllable doesn't matter so much as your ability to be consistent and INSIST that your kids are doing it the same. This starts in sixth grade.

Muddy/unclear can also mean bad tone quality, tuning, balance, and note endings just as much as note starts. These things are all connected.

Also, equally important to your articulation syllable is having air right behind the tongue. If airspeed is slow it doesn't much matter what your tongue is up to.

Language plays a significant role in articulation. This may affect your band.

Native Spanish speakers use a much softer "T" sound when they articulate "dha" than English speakers "tah" even when you say or ask for the same syllable.

Make sure you specify the need for the firm beginning. Point out the difference in how you say the letters in the alphabet, and stress that you need the ENGLISH pronunciation.

Whatever you do, make sure every kid is doing it. If you use a phrase, make sure they're all writing it down or saying it. Make it a chair test or a grade to get them to focus is more and give you a chance to listen individually.

Incorporate one of those sections of your pieces that focuses articulation into your warm-up that way they're getting daily work on it.

Some suggestions that have worked for me:

Find a visual representation of articulations that you like. There are several floating around on the internet. There's a page in the Foundations book that has some ideas. I like to think of legato as a brick of sound, staccato a block with space in between, accent as a block with a triangular left side, marcato is a triangle pointing right. Think what the sound waves would look like.

Use Tonal Energy. Display it on a screen if you can. Have the band (or individuals) play their notes into the analyzer, compare the shape of their sound waves with your ideal.

You MUST hear individuals. Go down the row in class. It can be fast, just a measure or two. Develop the skill of giving short feedback to one student while you're listening to another play - so A plays, while B is playing you're giving A a quick adjustment, while C is playing you're giving B an adjustment, etc.

This is good advice. I would like to add a few things:
1. Spend time addressing what happens/where/and when - what part of the tongue? where is it touching? what direction does it move? GREAT, now all of those things need to happen at the same time.

2. Asking THEM about what they hear will go a long way. So as you go down the line, ask the previous person "did he sound like you?" If not, then ask "why not? too long or too short?" Getting them involved and engaged in the process is the beginning of teaching them how to hear errors and correct them.
Once you get there, you can also ask "what can she (physically) do to play the note the same way you did?"

Also, with younger groups I sometimes have luck assigning a number. For example 1 is our shortest articulation, 3 is normal, 5 is the longest with most weight. Then I can always ask "what number articulation is this? what number did you actually play?"

Above all, be persistent, and know that it is not an immediate fix. Don't be afraid to address articulations while learning new music instead of later on.

Do the articulation drill in the blue book and listen specifically to how students are STARTING the note. Isolated and compare from person to person, etc.
