In My Garden Today

Below is a pic of a containerized VOODOO LILY or Devil's Tongue, Amorphophallus konjac, I have had for a couple years, and store it over the winter. When the tuber gets softball sized, the bulbs will flower, WITH NO LEAVES OR SOIL..in the house, while too cold to set out, in late winter! If anyone has ever smelled this plant's flower, they'd know it smells like a dead rat. After blooming the plant sprouts a stalk with foliage. These plant stalks, when blooming age, can be a good 5 ft tall. So far, my leaf stalk is only about 3 ft tall, so it may not bloom for another year, or two. Still, though, the leaf stalk still sports its characteristic, snake-skin-like mottling. I have an in ground specimen, that returns, so they are very hardy. Yet, when grown in the ground, these plants dont seem to develop as fast, as those grown in large pots, or grown in the ground, dug and stored, over the winter...
Can anybody guess what this plant is? His name is 'Jack's Giant'. I got it from Logee's, in a 4-inch pot, either last year, or the year before. It seems to be getting a little bigger, each year..
The TEXAS FIREBUSH, Hamelia patens, is beginning to chime in, with blooms. This is another shrub, that gets an annual spring haircut. It is hardy enough to be grown, as a dieback, in z8, and up...
Here's a pic of a JAPANESE BLUEBERRY TREE, Eleocarpus decipiens, I got as a small start, and have been growing in a 2 -gallon pot. It has now gotten large enough to go into the ground, I think. I hope to plant it, next year. This is not the plant that produces the blueberries we like in muffins and pancakes, but another broad-leaved evergreen (BLE), for those who like plants that retain foliage, all year long. It does produce a "blue" berry that resembles the known fruit...
Here is 'Fluffy Ruffles', in its summer glory. It is a form of Boston fern, that has a different leaf form. It goes semi-dormant, over the winter, and sheds some of its leaves. Its getting pretty big. I think it'll need a 3 or 5 gallon pot, next year...
Here's a new BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Cherry Go Round', I got. This cultivar is among the new RED forms of this Hydrangea, that is supposedly a tad hardier than other macrophyllas...

Alvin, did you ever grow Stapelia? I had one called ‘pigs butt’. The blooms smell like rotten meat! Fluffy ruffles fern is a beauty! Alvin I had a ponytail palm that was probably 30 years old. It was in a large pot(two b plants). I could no longer move it in and out do I by left it out last winter and it died. Good luck with your new macrophylla. Here is pic of mine blooming for second time. It has been blooming for several Weeks.
Thanks, Fred. Actually, I do have a a few Stapelia plants, one of which, that I have had for a decade or more. A piece fell off that larger plant, that was rooted. Neither plant has bloomed, though. Many plants have special needs that must be given attention to, in order for them to grow and flower well.
I ,too, have had a Pony Tail Palm for over 20 years. I posted a pic of it, last year. However, this summer, it succumbed to rot. Too much rain, I guess. It's kinda surprising, though, because although I knew the species is subject to rot, this is the first year that my plant seems to have been affected by moisture. So, I bought a new plant. It is not as small as some available plants are. The plant I lost was over 5 ft tall. This one is already about 3 ft tall.
Your macrophylla is beautiful. Has the same plant still blooming, or other one? I know you have more than one.
