Here are some great BLEs and conifers, that are hardy here, with no protection...
This ground-hugging little evergreen shrub, in which grass-like Crocus foliage is growing through, is hardy down to z3 or z4. It is called Canby's MOUNTAIN LOVER, Paxistima canbyi. There is a Western native species of Mountain Lover, that is just a tad less hardy, known as Paxistima myrsinites:

This early-flowering broad-leaved evergreen, with Lily of the Valley-like blooms, is hardy down to z5, and is called ANDROMEDA, or Pieris japonica:

This BLE, known as DOG HOBBLE, or Leucothoe fontaniesiana 'Rainbow', is hardy to z6, only. This winter, I dipped to the lower limit of z6a, temp-wise. So, some tip burn is evident, because it isn't protected:

Here is an evergreen conifer, in my yard, that is native to Eastern North America. It is very hardy, and requires no protection, to come through winters, in great shape. It is the Eastern Hemlock, or Tsuga canadensis:

Here is an evergreen hardy fern, known as HART'S TONGUE FERN. It will soon be flushing out new leaves for the season. It is happy to live under snow cover here:

The "leafless while blooming" FALL CYCLAMEN, or Cyclamen hederifolium, is still holding onto to its foliage, from fall. It too, doesn't mind being under snow, in winter. By June, these leaves disappear, but return after blooming in fall (somewhere around October):
