Looking down into the trunk from above :
.
My Musa basjoo will start leafing out with 8' of trunk .
( That dead Palmetto was Shaq . It was killed by my 8 days below 32F a couple winters ago . That winter cold period was my Palmageddon , which Texas experienced this winter . At least I didn't have any snow with my Palmageddon so my fronds on the other surviving palms weren't busted up . My lows were only 7F , but there were 2 nights with a low of 7F , and the prolonged cold was too much for it . I wish I had spent a little time and protected it . It was one of those learning lessons that unfortunately happen that I'll be prepared for next time . That just reminded me that I need to go to Gary's Nursery and see how his huge palmettos did . New Bern had a winter as bad as here that year , which normally isn't the case ; I normally have more severe cold than Gary does . He said it was a 100 year event . ) :
.
Shaq's replacement . I bought it HC last summer . I'm planning to cut Shaq's trunk down lower and put flowers or maybe a cocktail tomato in the hollow trunk :
.
This Musa basjoo trunk is huge . My size 13 shoe :
.
One of my large Manihot grahamiis showing a viable trunk . It also will be huge with this being its third season of growth on that trunk :
.
This Manihot trunk is bigger than I have ever seen it here , again , being its third season coming up . Normally these die to the ground but it will be an actual small tree this summer .
.
My Washy will always look like this after winter because it is only frond hardy to 24F ( there may have been a winter that only got down to 25F here , but that would probably be a 100 year type of event ) .
It needed no protection since the trunk is hardy to 15F or better , and the petioles are still green , with even a little green on the fronds near the petioles .
.
A look up into the crown :
.
Just to sum it up ; no protection on anything and even solid trunks on my Bananas .
My Low was 16F with only 7 other low 20F's .
How was your winter ?
Thanks for checking them out .
