My guess is that Hayward is a 10a, possibly 9b location. What does a guy do to push zones when his expected winter minima is in the 25F - 30F range? At that point, it's not so much zone pushing as climate pushing. Trying to grow a plant that likes lots of heat, for example, might be "pushing" things for you. Perhaps a coconut palm, for example. Or, maybe pushing in the opposite direction. Trying to grow a plant with a minimum winter chilling requirement.
